How to Become a Certified Eating Disorder Nurse

Nurses, including Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs), play a crucial role in the treatment of eating disorders. They provide support, care, acute and ongoing treatment to those living with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other related conditions.

Unfortunately, standard medical training often falls short of preparing nurses and other clinicians to identify and treat these conditions effectively. Knowing how to become a certified eating disorder nurse can help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care to those living with eating disorders.

At the Eating Disorders Education Institute (EDEI), we offer 15 different courses for nurses and clinicians passionate about eating disorder treatment who want to remain up-to-date on the latest advances in the field. Our EDEI-EDP certification is more than just a credential- it is a testament to your dedication and commitment to your patients, and can help open doors in your career. If you’re ready to tackle the challenges of treating eating disorders head-on, here’s how to become a certified eating disorder nurse.

What is an Eating Disorder Nurse?

Nurses and Nurse Practitioners for Eating Disorders

An eating disorder nurse is a specialized healthcare professional who assesses, treats, and supports patients living with conditions like:

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

These clinicians combine foundational nursing skills with a deep understanding of the psychological and physical complexities of eating disorders. Nurses play a pivotal role in helping provide emotional and physical support to those in need of acute care due to their eating disorder, as well as an ongoing therapeutic relationship for those in outpatient care.

Unfortunately, most RNs and NPs receive very little training in eating disorders during their education. Eating disorders are the least covered psychiatric conditions in the American managed care heath insurance system, showing just how little attention is provided to this area of mental health.2 This means that not all nurses may have the necessary specialized knowledge and skills to effectively support individuals with eating disorders.

However, there are some nurses who choose to specialize in eating disorder treatment and recovery through additional training and certifications. These nurses can become an invaluable asset to any healthcare team dealing with eating disorders. Through their specialized education, they are equipped with a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of these conditions, as well as the most effective evidence-based interventions.

Eating disorder training programs for nurses can include courses on the medical and psychological aspects of eating disorders, as well as evidence-based treatments and interventions. They may also cover topics such as:

  • Nutrition counseling
  • Body dysmorphia
  • Co-occurring mental health disorders like mood disorders and anxiety3
  • Cultural and societal influences on body image and eating behavior
  • Family-based therapy for adolescent eating disorders
  • Medical complications and nutritional deficiencies related to eating disorders
  • Strategies for supporting patients in recovery and preventing relapse
  • Working with interdisciplinary treatment teams, including therapists, physicians, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals

Their specialized training and expertise in treating eating disorders is crucial for providing comprehensive care to patients.

In addition to formal training programs, nurses can also attend conferences or workshops focused on eating disorder treatment to continue their education and stay current with the latest research and best practices. Perhaps the best way to gain knowledge on eating disorders, stay updated on the latest research and treatment advances, and grow as an eating disorder nurse is to obtain a credential like our EDEI-EDP certificate. When physicians recognize an eating disorder early, refer appropriately, and provide ongoing medical monitoring, patients experience:

  • shorter illness duration
  • reduced medical complications
  • better engagement with therapy
  • lower relapse rates

Education saves lives. Timely physician intervention is indispensable for patient survival.

Essential Steps on How to Become a Certified Eating Disorder Nurse

To learn how to become a certified eating disorder nurse, you must combine your foundational medical education with targeted, specialized training. This journey requires dedication, clinical practice, and a commitment to ongoing education.

Step 1: Obtaining a Nursing License

First, you need to complete your foundational nursing education and obtain your registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP) licensure. Both RN’s and NP’s are eligible for specialized certification in eating disorder nursing, but an NP license allows you to work independently and provide advanced practice care.

After obtaining your nursing license, gaining experience in the field of mental health is crucial. Eating disorders are known to be the most fatal of all psychiatric disorders, highlighting how critical it is to have well-trained and experienced mental health professionals.4 Clinical experience allows you to work with patients, observe different treatment approaches, and develop your skills as an eating disorder nurse.

There are many different settings where eating disorder nurses can work, including:

  • Inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities
  • Hospitals
  • Mental health clinics
  • Private practices

Each setting offers unique opportunities and challenges for an eating disorder nurse. For instance, working at an emergency room can provide RNs and NPs with a fast-paced environment and exposure to a wide range of patients with eating disorders. On the other hand, working at an inpatient treatment facility may allow for more long-term care and relationship-building with patients.

Nurses must remember that each credentialing program requires different clinical experience requirements. For instance, 2500 hours of direct and indirect care experience in eating disorders is required to obtain the Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) credential through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP).

Continuing education not only allows for professional growth and development, but it also demonstrates a commitment to providing the best possible care for patients with eating disorders. As research and treatment methods are constantly evolving, staying up-to-date on current practices is crucial to ensure patients receive the most effective and evidence-based care.

Finally, you must pursue specialized certification. EDEI offers a clear pathway to achieving your EDEI-EDP Professional Credential. For those who already hold a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) certification, we will honor that investment and accept transfers through June 2027. For those who do not, our 15-course program will prepare you for the EDEI-EDP exam, advance your skills, and help position you as an expert in the field.
